MIDDLE EAST AND MAGHREB

“MIDDLE EAST AND MAGHREB. ELEMENTS OF CONTINUITY AND GAPS WITH RESPECT TO THE FIRST ARAB UPRISINGS “

In cooperation with the Shenker Institute and Studio Panzarani, IASEM oversaw the meeting on the big picture of the situation in the Maghreb and Middle East at almost two years since the beginning of the “Arab Spring”, to check the situation of things and develop critical analysis.

The meeting was held in range of “The School of Life”, which – said the President of the Shenker Institute, Barbara Santoro – is a journey inspired by the tradition of the classical schools to direct us in this time of uncertainty: lessons and comparisons to reflect on the values to be preserved and developed in this new millennium.

President of IASEM, Giuseppe Papaleo, opened the meeting by reminding the event organized by IASEM on the 27 and 30 January 2012 in Tunis about the democratization process. That experience showed all the complexity and contradiction of a process that was announced to be long and not without obstacles. Obstacles and complexities that have emerged clearly by the intervention of Dr. Marco Di Donato, a graduate student at the University of Genoa and expert on Political Islam.

The meeting ended with an interesting debate among experts and audience.
